Canggu on a budget
Now, before we talk about our favourite cheap eats in Canggu, we thought it would be best to talk about what we actually consider a cheap eat. As we aim to travel as long as possible we stick to a budget of roughly 40$ – 50$ a day, that is for the both of us together. Curious how exactly we managed to do that? Read all about traveling Bali on a budget here! So when it comes to food, we eat on average two meals out a day and we aim for every meal to be around IDR 40,000 – IDR 75,000 or $2.85 – $5.35 per person, including drinks. The restaurants and cafes below fall within this category, with some on the lower end, such as the warungs and local eats, and some on the higher end, such as the cafes! So now that you know a bit better what to expect keep on reading to find out which cheap eats should be on your Bali bucket list!.

Magcel Cafe
Magcel Cafe quickly became one of our favourite breakfast spots in Canggu. The newly opened cafe serves some of the best coffee we have had in Bali, and is definitely one of the more affordable cafes we’ve found in Canggu. Some of our favourite dishes include the magcel breakfast for IDR 58,000 ($4.15), the avocado toast which sets you back IDR 50,000 ($3.60), and the delicious crispy chicken burger costing you only IDR 60,000 ($4.30). The coffee at Magcel Cafe is a bit on the pricier side, IDR 37,000 ($2.65) for a flat white, but in our opinion well worth the money. But in the end it is the staff at Magcel Cafe and the incredible quality of the food that made us kept coming back for more, and we absolutely cannot wait to visit this cafe again in the future!
The cost: Breakfast for two, including two avocado toasts with poached eggs, was IDR 100,000 ($7.15).

Hungry Bird Coffee Roaster
Hungry Bird is by far one of the more affordable cafes in Canggu. Hungry Bird is a self service cafe that no matter what time of the morning you’ll visit, you’ll almost always find it packed with people, and we sure know why. Breakfast items start with prices as low as IDR 24,000 ($1.70) for a stack of three delicious fluffy pancakes and similar prices can be found across the menu for healthier options such as fruit plates and oat porridge. But don’t worry, if you prefer to start your day with a savoury meal opt for one of the many egg dishes available, such as the classic eggs benedict or the morning breakfast tacos both setting you back IDR 41,000 ($2.95). The prices for the meals are some of the lowest we have found in Canggu, especially when it comes to cafes, however, the prices of the coffees are roughly the same as many of the other cafes in Canggu with a flat white going for IDR 25,000 ($1.80). And don’t forget, if you want a spot in this cafe it is better to show up early to avoid the larger crowds!

Cinta Cafe
Out of all the cafes and restaurants on this list Cinta Cafe must be our favourite place for breakfast. While their menu and in general their prices are not considered the most affordable it is the special breakfast deal that makes this a cheap eat to us. Between 8am – 10am Cinta Cafe has a breakfast deal that consists of coffee, juice and a one of the six breakfast choices for only IDR 70,000 ($4.95). Our personal favourites breakfast items are the flat white, the lime juice and the shakshuka or the egg and bacon bun. There is no other cafe where we have been where we would have been able to order all of these three items for that price! However, the main reason we keep on coming back here is the great ambiance and the incredible kind staff that always welcomes you with a smile.

Oma Jamu
Oma Jamu is one of our favourite vegan restaurants in Canggu, especially for those who are on a budget! Pick from a simple menu or opt to build your own plate from large amount of veggies and vegan proteins that are available from the buffet between lunch and dinner time. While we love the buffet, there is one item on the lunch menu that we simply can’t resist: the tempeh burger with sweet potato fries. Fresh, crispy and absolutely delicious, we could have one every single day and it is only IDR 53,000 ($3.75). Besides the lunch menu and the buffet there is also a breakfast and dinner menu available with many delicious and healthy choices. Some of our personal favourite choices of the buffet must be the pumpkin and the roast veggies, this buffet truly is a dream come true for vegans!

Varuna Warung
One of the best ways to eat on a budget is to skip the Western cafes and go straight for the local food, and what better place to find affordable local food then at a warung! While Canggu is home to many warungs there is one that we especially love: Varuna Warung. Varuna Warung is located at Batu Bolong Street and it will be a rare occasion if you have this place all to yourself. Order a veggie mie goreng for IDR 25,000 ($1.80) or simply opt to build your own plate from one of the many buffet-style veggies and meat options. The best thing about a buffet style warung is that the price of your dinner completely depends on what you pick and choose! A plate filled with rice, multiple veggies and some meat can cost as little as IDR 40,000 ($2.85), if not less if you are opting for a full vegetarian plate.

Combine with a delicious fresh lime juice for IDR 15,000 ($1.05), or perhaps opt for one of their many savoury options. However, Warung Ambara doesn’t only serve breakfast, they also serve lunch and dinner where you can pick from either the buffet (meat and veggie options available) or opt for the classic meals such as veggie nasi goreng or gado gado for only IDR 25,000 ($1.80)

Manas Cafe
While Manas Cafe is located slightly out of the busier area of Canggu, it is worth the drive in our opinion as it has been one of the most affordable, and tasty, cafes we have come across in Canggu. Start your day with a breakfast for only IDR 39,000 ($2.80) from the eggs and more section, including toast with avocado and poached eggs (you get by now perhaps that this is one of my all time favourite breakfast choices) accompanied by a flat white for only IDR 24,000 ($1.70)! Smoothie bowls go for IDR 35,000 ($2.50) here and mixed juices are only IDR 19,000 ($1.35). The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming and Manas Cafe has been such a success that they opened up another cafe a bit further up the road. Besides breakfast the cafe also serves, lunch, dinner and cocktails!
The cost: Breakfast, including the above mentioned toast and a flat white, was IDR 63,000 ($4.50).
The info: Manas Cafe, Jl. Munduk Tengah No.3-7, open daily from 8am – 11pm.

Warung Local
Warung Local must be one of Canggu’s most popular warungs, because no matter what time of the day you stop by there’s always at least a handful of people enjoying the delicious food here. Meat, fish, chicken, tofu, tempeh, and dishes filled with the most fresh and delicious veggies, this warung is a dream come true for those visiting Canggu on a budget. No matter if you are a vegan or a meat lover, there is something here for everyone. Some of our personal favourites are the pumpkin, the delicious peanut sauce topping, the potato fritters and the curried vegetables. The cost: lunch for two consisting of rice, veggies and vegetarian proteins, was IDR 80,000 ($5.84).

Where to stay in Canggu
If you are only in Canggu for a short visit we would highly recommend to stay in the area of Batu Bolong, Canggu’s main street. This is where you will find shops, some of Canggu’s best cafes and plenty of restaurants to dine at in the evening. Plus, at the end of Batu Bolong you will find Old Man’s, a bar overlooking the beach, a perfect place to catch a drink and watch the sun set. You will find plenty of accommodation in this area, both luxury and budget. If you are not planning on staying in a private villa or high end hotel then we highly recommend checking out Lila Loka Homestay. Lila Loka Homestay is one of our favourite accommodations in Bali and is conveniently located in a quiet area, just a street over from Batu Bolong street. Lila Loka Homestay has a refreshing pool and a beautiful view over the rice fields, especially from the upper floor, a perfect place to relax after you are done exploring Canggu.
